Getting started with MOOD Angel
Five minutes to set up. Read the rest when you have a coffee. Angel is built only on MOOD's own technical documentation, and it is for qualified colour professionals.
Get logged in
- Open the link in your welcome email. Your code fills itself in, so nobody is squinting at a screen trying to type it with colour on their gloves.
- Accept the professional use agreement. Patch and strand tests still apply exactly as they always have. Angel never replaces your judgement.
- Add it to your home screen when the app offers. Angel needs to be one tap away at the backwash, not four taps deep in a browser.
- Share the code with your team. One code covers your salon, so put it where your stylists can see it.
Start here: just ask it something
You do not have to run a consultation to get an answer. Mixing ratios, developer strengths, processing times, shade identification, what a product does — ask and Angel answers straight away, in two or three lines. No questions back, no forms.
Try it mid-service with something you already know the answer to — "what developer for grey coverage?". That is usually the moment Angel stops being an app.
The buttons across the top
Tap one to start, or ignore them and type. Both work.
| How to Use | Angel explains every button itself. A good first tap for a new starter. |
| Permanent Color | Shades, mixing ratios, how the range works. |
| Demi Color | The same, for demi. |
| Semi Permanent | Paint Color Mask — reviving colour between appointments, vivid reflections on lightened hair. |
| Bleach | Lightener formulas and protocols for the job in front of you. |
| Activators | Developer strengths — which, and when. |
| Color Charts | The permanent and demi shade charts on screen, and the numbering system explained. |
| Patch test | The full protocol: when it is required, how to do it, what to record. |
| Addmino‑18 | The repair protocol. A separate professional repair brand that works alongside MOOD — optional, if your salon stocks it. |
| Colour Consultation | Colour appointments. One question per screen, safety first. Angel’s formula and method come back into the chat, ready to read aloud. See below. |
| Aftercare | The home-care regime for any guest. A few taps, then the products to go home with appear in the chat, ready to read aloud. Uses none of your messages. See below. |
| Education | Learn or look something up: colour technique, toning, grey coverage, cutting foundations. |
Asking for a colour formula
Tap Colour Consultation. It takes you through the questions that change the formula, one per screen: safety first, then the service, the hair as it is now, its history, and where you’re taking it. If an answer means the colour can’t go ahead today, it stops there and tells you why, and no formula is asked for.
At the end, tap Get the formula. You land back in the chat and Angel gives you the formula in full:
- Consultation summary · Expected result · Formula · Developer
- Processing time · Application method · Technical rationale
It’s kept short enough to read at the chair. Tap Read to hear it, or ask a follow-up question; Angel already has the whole consultation in front of it. One consultation uses one message.
You can still just type a formula question. Angel asks for what it needs first (natural level, target level and tone, history, condition) and won’t guess around a missing answer.
That last one matters. Technical rationale is Angel telling you why — which is what turns a formula into training for whoever is standing next to you.
Every formula ends with the same line about patch testing and professional judgement. That is deliberate and it is not a glitch.
The Aftercare button
Tap Aftercare at the end of any appointment: colour, cut, blowdry or treatment. It is eleven quick taps, one per screen:
- Safety — any reaction to a hair product before, and whether the scalp is broken or inflamed
- Scalp and hair — the scalp, the hair as it is now, texture, curl pattern, frizz
- Routine — heat tools, mornings, what the guest would most like, and whether a holiday is coming
Anything to watch shows first, under Check before it goes home. Then tap Get the prescription.
Where the money is
This is the part most salons skip, so Angel does it for you.
You land back in the chat with a regime, in order: wash, treatment, styling, finishing, plus sun care if a holiday is coming. Each product has one sentence, worded so you can read it straight off the screen to the guest, or tap Read and let Angel say it.
It is chosen the way a MOOD technician would choose it: the scalp first, then the condition of the hair, then texture and routine. It comes up instantly, and it doesn’t use any of your messages.
It happens on colour work too. After every chemical service Angel recommends, and every educational answer involving one, you get the aftercare with it — Colour Protect after colour, Ultra Care Restoring after bleach, the Curl, Damaged Hair and Derma ranges as needed, and Addmino-18 home care if you stock it.
Phrased as what she needs to keep the result, not as a sale. Say it while she is in the chair and the retail conversation has already happened.
What it will not let you do
Worth knowing, because it is protecting you as much as her.
Angel stops the service
- Client under 16
- Previous reaction to hair colour
- Reaction to a tattoo, henna or permanent make-up
- Sensitive, itchy or visibly damaged scalp
Angel calls for a fresh allergy test
- New client, or a different shade or brand
- Over 6 months since the last colour
- Over 12 months since the last test
- A new tattoo, henna or permanent make-up since the last colour
- A new allergy, medication for allergies, steroids or immunosuppressants
And when a case is genuinely beyond a chatbot — scalp burning during processing, suspected metallic dye, extreme damage, a correction past documented limits — it says so and sends you to a senior MOOD technician rather than having a guess.
Two things it will never do. It will not invent a formula, ratio or timing that is not documented — if it does not have it, it tells you to check the MOOD technical guide rather than risk it. And it only ever answers on MOOD's own documentation, so do not apply what it tells you to another manufacturer's product.
Hands free
Tap the microphone and ask out loud. Tap read-aloud on any answer and Angel talks back. Nobody is touching a phone screen with a tint brush in their hand.
Getting the best out of it
- Use it before you are stuck, not after. Angel is just as useful confirming a formula you are already confident in as it is rescuing a correction at ten past four.
- Ask for the why. "Why that developer?" is how a junior learns at the chair instead of guessing at the chair. It is the cheapest training you will ever put in.
- Give it the real picture. Bands, root drag, the regrowth that keeps lifting warm, what she uses at home. The more honest the description, the better the answer.
- Put it in front of the client. Turning the screen round and showing her the chart stops it being your opinion and starts it being a plan.
- Trust the "I don't know". If Angel says it lacks the verified detail, that is the safety working. Every other answer is worth more because of it.
Your monthly allowance
Your subscription includes 300 messages a month. A message is one question and the answer back — the answer does not count separately. That is around ten a day, which is more than most salons get through.
If a busy month runs you out, a top-up is £3.99 for 100 more and they never expire. Your allowance resets every month on the same date you joined.
If something is not right
Reply to your welcome email and it comes straight to me. Or join the MOOD Professional Hair Experience group on Facebook, where you will also get tips and updates as Angel grows.
Where to start. Pick one client from this week's column — the stubborn white at the temples, the correction you are not looking forward to, the big change. Try Angel on that one first. That is usually the moment it clicks.
